Spendit is a German employee benefits platform used by over 8,000 companies across Germany and Austria. Their flagship product, the SpenditCard, is a Visa prepaid card that allows employers to deliver tax-free monthly benefits to employees. Lunchit is one of several benefits within the platform, handling meal allowance reimbursements and the compliance requirements that come with them.
This was a consulting engagement through SQUER Solutions, where I joined as Lead Software Engineer to contribute across three interconnected initiatives on the platform.
The Team
The engagement was led by Philipp Piwowarsky (Principal Software Engineer at SQUER) across the receipt validation and compliance onboarding workstreams, and by Keno Dreßel (Head of AI & Data at SQUER) on the AI modernization effort.
Lunchit Receipt Validation
Spendit's meal allowance benefit is subject to regulatory requirements around expense validation, but the existing workflow had become a bottleneck — difficult to use in practice, which led to delayed or skipped checks and created compliance risk for customers.
We delivered a complete, regulator-ready validation workflow that makes compliance checks fast, intuitive, and dependable. The new flow supports both ongoing and historical checks for audit readiness, includes AI-assisted flagging to reduce manual workload while keeping humans in the loop, and uses automated background processing and notifications to ensure timely action.
Business Compliance Onboarding (BKYC)
To onboard new customer organizations through Spendit's regulated financial partner, businesses must complete a Know Your Customer compliance process. Documentation requirements vary significantly depending on a company's legal and organizational characteristics — a complexity that had previously led to friction, incomplete submissions, and lengthy back-and-forth.
We transformed this into a guided, step-by-step experience. Smart pre-fill of available company data reduces manual entry, and documentation requirements are surfaced dynamically based on each company's profile — ensuring completeness without unnecessary requests.
Lunchit AI Modernization
Spendit's AI system for receipt processing and fraud detection had gone four years without significant development, resulting in error-prone recognition and declining confidence in the platform. SQUER designed and built a next-generation AI platform to replace it — a modern, cloud-native architecture balancing fast user-facing responses with deep asynchronous fraud analysis. All automated decisions come with justifications to satisfy regulatory requirements. My role was on the integration side, surfacing the new AI pipeline's outputs within the receipt validation workflow.
